Makiwara Post - Accessories

Targets

Traditionally, a makiwara post would be bound at the top with straw rope to provide a striking target. Nowadays it is more common to use a leather or canvas target which is padded with foam rubber. We provide a range of different targets to suit your individual preferences.

Straw

For the traditionalist, a makiwara made from straw rope. The straw makiwara should be softened-up (give it a good battering with a heavy mallet) before attaching it to the post. It is also recommended that you cover a straw makiwara with a towel when you first start using this style of target as this will reduce abrasion on the knuckles.

Leather

Our premium range of targets backed with a dense foam rubber pad. A firm 2mm thick leather covering a dense foam rubber pad. Minimises abrasion on the seiken while still remaining firm enough to condition the hands.

Mountings

Your makiwara posts needs to be firmly secured at its base. This can be accomplished in a number of different ways according to your requirements. The standard way of securing a post is simply to dig a hole in your garden, fill it with concrete and embed the post in that. We can supply longer length posts for customers who wish to mount their post in this manner. This method is, however, not always convenient because of space restrictions or those living in flats and it certainly isn't portable between different locations.

Bolt-down mounting

Our Bolt down mounting is a custom built solution for when portability is required. The mounting bracket is made from ¼ inch thick steel with central reinforcing fillets on the front and back. All exterior joins are fillet welded to B.S 4872. The post is secured into the bracket using 4 coach bolts supplied and is designed to enable vertical adjustment to compensate for uneven floors. Portable platform

Our platform base is the ideal solution for the karate-ka who needs a portable solution or is unable to mount the makiwara in a permanent location. It has been designed to provide a stable platform that will pack away into a cupboard or medium sized car boot with back seats down (Dimensions: 48" x 36" x 2"). This is a heavy piece of kit and weighs approx 27kg.

The platform is made of laminated timber that is sanded and sealed with two coats of high quality varnish. The wearing course/top has a 2mm thick friction foam covering to aid grip.
