Striking Posts
All our posts are made from fully-seasoned timber which we hand pick at our specialist suppliers. Our posts are cut to length, planed and all edges are rounded over. After sanding they are treated with two coats of top quality varnish. Please note that timber is a natural product which may contain minor cosmetic defects and small knots within the grain, these will not affect the performance of the makiwara.
Sizes
You will derive the maximum benefit from your makiwara if it is set up to match your shoulder height. Our stock posts can be tailored to your exact requrement:
- The 58" post is designed to be surface mounted using one of our custom built brackets
Our posts are tapered for increased flexibility. The taper starts at ¼" thick at the top, tapering out to full width approximately 45" down the post. These measurements correspond to traditional recommendations and offer flexibility with increasing resistance.
Materials
Redwood: The 'Basic'
Our budget "no frills" model. Redwood offers excellent flexibility and is quite forgiving and is best suited to someone who is inexperienced in their use of the makiwara. As reflected in the price, redwood is less durable than our other materials and tends to wear quickly with heavy use.

English white oak: the 'Professional'
Oak is a dense heavy wood but still allows good flexibility with a through action. The 'Professional' will last for years of regular use, even in exposed sites.
